LVMH’s “Journées Particulières” were a massive hit this past weekend in Paris. For the second year, the luxury group welcomed the public in its ateliers. When bookings opened a few weeks ago, invitations were gone within minutes. People without one had to queue for 5 long hours at Dior. Today I will tell you about my first visit: the Berluti made-to-measure shoes workshop. Please excuse the poor quality of some of the pictures: cameras were forbidden and security was tight but I did manage to capture some moments!

The Berluti workshop is located in an apartment close to the store in the Champs-Elysées area. The house is renowned for its shoes created entirely by hand: their proportions fit the client’s feet exactly and the designs are personalized according to his wishes. The 12 craftsmen work with an extreme attention to detail, which comes to no surprise when you know that 50 hours are necessary to make a pair of shoes. Be prepared to empty your wallet: prices start at 4,800 €. It’s a luxury Yves Saint Laurent and Andy Warhol indulged in.

The visit started in the fitting room where the client and the master shoemaker first meet. Both work hand in hand to design the shoe: the shoemaker takes the measurements of the client’s feet and advises him in his choice of design and leather. Berluti owns a wide range of luxurious skins such as crocodile, ostrich, elephant and shagreen.

After this first meeting, the craftsman carves the wooden lasts with the tool in the picture according to the client’s measurements. The lasts are a base for the whole production process and are then stocked in the archives.

The shoemaker then draws the pattern of the design and cuts the leather pieces of the shoe. This material can be embroidered and holes punched with a metallic tool. (Clients often ask for their initials to be visible on their precious shoes.) Over a second meeting, the client tries on a model to make sure he is satisfied with the design and comfort.

The assembly is the most technical and lengthy process (30 hours!). The leather top of the shoes is sewn to the soles. This is quite a physical part for the shoemakers’ hands: they were actually wearing lots of bandages to protect them. After the heels are added, the order number and Berluti logo are stamped in the leather. As a final touch, a craftsman applies the patina, creating the Venezia leather the brand is famous for. The shoes are then delivered to the client over a third meeting. In all, it takes 6 to 9 months to create a pair of Berluti shoes.

When I left the workshop, I thought I had just witnessed a secret form of haute-couture. Given how luxurious the materials are and how everything is done by hand, I think I might be scared to walk in these shoes for fear of damaging them! Grand succès pour les Journées Particulières de LVMH le weekend dernier ! Le géant du luxe ouvrait les portes de ses ateliers au public et les invitations se sont arrachées sur Internet. Pour ceux qui n’en n’avaient pas, il y avait jusqu’à 5 heures d’attente chez Dior. J’ai eu la chance de me rendre dans ces salons mais c’est mon autre visite que je vais vous raconter aujourd’hui : les ateliers de fabrication des souliers sur mesure Berluti. Les photos étaient interdites alors elles ne sont pas de la meilleure qualité ; cela vous donnera quand même un aperçu !

Les ateliers Berluti sont situés près des Champs-Elysées dans un appartement, à quelques pas de la boutique. La maison est réputée pour ses souliers entièrement faits à la main : les proportions collent exactement à celles du client et les modèles sont personnalisés selon ses souhaits. Les 12 artisans apportent un soin extrême à la fabrication, si bien qu’une paire demande entre 50 et 70 heures de travail. Cette qualité se paie : il vous faudra débourser au moins 4800 € pour vos souliers Berluti. Mais vous aurez le luxe d’avoir le même fournisseur qu’Yves Saint Laurent et Andy Warhol.

La visite a commencé dans le salon où a lieu la première rencontre entre le maître-bottier et le client. Il s’agit d’un véritable travail à 4 mains : le bottier prend les mesures des pieds et conseille le client dans ses choix esthétiques, notamment sur le cuir. Berluti dispose d’une multitude de peaux précieuses : crocodile, autruche, éléphant, galuchat…

Après ce rendez-vous, l’artisan sculpte la forme du pied du client dans du bois avec la machine que vous pouvez voir dans la photo, puis la lisse avec un outil. Cette forme servira de base tout au long de la fabrication et sera conservée dans les archives. Les artisans dessinent ensuite le patron du modèle et découpent les multiples pièces du soulier dans le cuir. Cette matière peut être brodée et travaillée en détail : des perforations sont faites à la main avec un outil en métal. (Les clients demandent souvent que leurs initiales figurent sur leurs précieux souliers.) Lors d’un 2^ème rendez-vous, le client essaie une maquette pour valider l’esthétique et évaluer le niveau de confort.

On peut alors passer au montage. C’est l’étape la plus longue (30 heures !) et la plus technique. La partie supérieure en cuir est cousue à semelle avec du fil de lin. Ce travail est assez physique pour la main des artisans : ils portent de nombreux pansements pour les protéger. Après l’ajout des talons, c’est le bichonnage : le numéro de la commande et la marque Berluti sont frappés sur la semelle. Touche finale : le patinage où l’on obtient le cuir Venezia, signature de la maison. Les souliers sont alors livrés au client lors du 3^ème rendez-vous qui a lieu 6 à 9 mois après la prise de ses mesures.

Que de travail pour des souliers ! C’est vraiment de la haute-couture des pieds. Mon prochain billet sera dédié à ma visite des salons Dior. A bientôt !

I am quite fond of Louis Vuitton windows: they never fail to make me smile with their fantasy and humor. So when Style.com wrote that the Champs-Elysées store would unveil its new windows this morning, I decided to go have a look at the dinosaurs.  Their golden hues and the Vuitton pre-fall collection are well-assorted. Vogue Paris published behind the scene pictures here.

This will be quite a LVMH weekend for me as the leading luxury group will open its ateliers to the public in Europe for the Journées Particulières. I will be visiting the bespoke shoes workshop of Berluti and the Dior salons on Sunday, which I am very excited about! I hope I will be able to sneak some pictures to share the adventure with you. In the meantime, have a great weekend!

Alors quand Style.com a annoncé que le magasin des Champs-Elysées dévoilerait sa dernière mise en scène ce matin, j’ai pris le métro pour admirer ces dinosaures. Leurs os dorés se marient bien aux tons de la pré-collection pour l’automne 2013. Vogue Paris a publié sur son site une série de photos sur la création des vitrines.

Ce sera un weekend LVMH pour moi. Dans le cadre des ses Journées Particulières, le géant du luxe ouvre ses portes au public et j’ai eu la chance de pouvoir m’inscrire aux visites des ateliers Berluti et des salons Dior. Today I learned that the Noé bag was originally designed to carry bottles of champagne, which makes me like it even more! Louis Vuitton created a nice video around this design.

Aujourd’hui j’ai appris que le sac Noé servait à l’origine à transporter des bouteilles de champagne. Cette anecdote me fait l’aimer encore plus ! D’ailleurs, Vuitton a créé une vidéo sympa autour de ce modèle.

Paris Haute Couture is the fashion exhibition of the moment in Paris. With the support of Swarovski, the Hôtel de Ville de Paris hosts more than 100 magnificent designs of the past century for you to see up close. Born from the wild imagination of designers, created with the best materials and endless hours of detailed work from the ateliers, haute-couture is fashion at its most luxurious and exclusive. As the curator points out, it is also a Parisian art.

So Gatsby.

Please be patient when arriving at the Hôtel de Ville: I waited for nearly an hour outside and the same thing happened to my friend Lani. But I promise you the long queue is worth it! And the exhibition is free. (Just reward yourself afterwards with an éclair from the nearby L’Eclair de Génie like I did.)

The exhibition starts in a gallery detailing the history of haute couture. Though now considered a disappearing art, haute couture was the main way to sell fashion on the luxury market before prêt à porter took over in the 1960s. Further down the gallery, you can see the first dress of the exhibition: a richly embroidered Chanel gown.

You then get to a room where all the designs are shown. The Hôtel de Ville is not as appropriate as the Musée des Arts Décoratifs for fashion exhibitions: the place is quite dark and narrow. The layout is not flattering for the clothes which look crammed, so have a look at the excellent catalog before or after your visit.

This is what Balenciaga looked like in the 1960s. The top dress is really surprising, like a hidden fall of flowers moving as one walks.

Behind the bottom one, you can see a purple gown designed by John Galliano for Christian Dior. Raf Simons, who is now at the helm of the brand, said that Galliano’s style isn’t relevant anymore. Well I am still impressed by his wild talent and hope to see more of his work at the Dior and Impressionism exhibition this summer at Granville, as I did 3 years ago (see here).

Dior is also the place where 21-year-old Yves Saint Laurent shot to fame in 1958 before he created his own brand. I have marveled before at his precocious talent in this post about the YSL exhibition in the USA. Here, this gown is all about the woman as a flower (narrow waist / full skirt), in the style of Christian Dior’s New Look.

Ah, Madame Grès. When I published this picture on Instagram, I realized I wasn’t the only one amazed at how modern and visionary this designer was.

I love the sensuality of this Yves Saint Laurent dress, which I already showed you here. It comes from a collection that caused quite a scandal in 1971: critics deemed it vulgar and of poor taste. A situation that is quite reminiscent with Hedi Slimane’s latest show for Saint Laurent Paris…

And Givenchy ends the trilogy with this sexy armor of a dress. If you follow me on Twitter and Instagram, you know that I loved the costumes Riccardo Tisci designed for the Bolero danced by the Paris Opera Ballet. Below is another design of his on the right.

People tend to think that haute couture is all about fancy gowns, forgetting that it can also be daywear as represented here by the famous Chanel suits.

But I don’t mind a touch of excentricity. Merci Elsa Schiaparelli!

And can you really see through this Maison Martin Margiela mask? I’d rather wear the Yves Saint Laurent smoking.

Balmain detail (1958)

C’est l’expo mode du moment à Paris. Avec le soutien de Swarovski, Paris Haute Couture présente plus de 100 magnifiques modèles à examiner sous toutes les coutures. Née de l’imaginaire des créateurs, créée dans les matières les plus luxueuses, issue d’heures de travail méticuleux des petites mains, la haute couture fait resplendir les savoir-faire des maisons. Elle repousse les limites de la mode tout en nous faisant rêver.

L’expo a lieu à l’Hôtel de Ville de Paris. Armez-vous de patience pour y entrer : l’attente peut durer une heure. (Mais je vous promets que ça en vaut la peine ! En plus, c’est gratuit.) L’expo commence dans une galerie détaillant l’histoire de la haute couture. Si elle représente aujourd’hui plus un laboratoire d’idées avec une fin quasi-artistique, la haute couture était avant la montée du prêt-à-porter dans les années 1960 le moyen privilégié de vente sur le marché du luxe. Enfin on aperçoit le premier modèle : cette robe Chanel toute rebrodée de pierres bleues et d’un camélia au col. On arrive ensuite dans une grande salle où sont exposées les robes. L’Hôtel de Ville, ça ne vaut pas le Musée des Arts Décoratifs : le lieu est sombre et relativement étroit pour accueillir toutes ces pièces. Cela provoque un effet d’entassement qui ne permet pas d’apprécier les modèles à leur juste valeur. N’hésitez donc pas à feuilleter le beau catalogue de l’exposition avant ou après votre visite.

Voici à quoi ressemblaient les modèles Balenciaga dans les années 1960. Le premier est vraiment étonnant, comme une chute de fleurs à moitié cachée qui s’anime avec le mouvement des jambes. Derrière le second, on aperçoit une robe violette créée par John Galliano pour Christian Dior. Raf Simons qui est maintenant à la tête de cette maison a dit que la mode de Galliano ne correspondrait plus à l’air du temps. Artistiquement, c’est l’un des créateurs qui m’a fait le plus rêver et qui m’éblouit toujours par son talent fou. J’espère pouvoir admirer ses modèles à l’expo Dior et l’Impressionnisme cet été à Granville, comme je l’avais fait dans ce musée il y a 3 ans (voir ici). Dior, c’est aussi le lieu où Yves Saint Laurent s’est fait connaitre alors qu’il n’avait que 21 ans en 1958. Je vous avais déjà parlé de la précocité de son génie dans ce billet dédié à l’expo YSL aux Etats-Unis.

Mes trois robes préférées de l’expo. Ce qui est intéressant avec le noir, c’est qu’il met l’accent sur la coupe et les détails. Ah, Madame Grès. Lorsque j’ai publié la photo de cette robe sur Instagram, nous avons été plusieurs à nous émerveiller de la modernité de cette créatrice. J’adore la sensualité de cette robe Yves Saint Laurent. Elle est issue d’une collection de 1971 qui avait fait scandale à l’époque : les critiques la trouvaient vulgaire et de mauvais goût. (Je vous l’avais déjà montrée ici.) Cela rappelle les réactions face au dernier défilé d’Hedi Slimane pour la marque désormais appelée Saint Laurent Paris… Givenchy achève la trilogie avec cette robe-armure savamment découpée. Ceux qui me suivent sur Twitter et Instagram savent que j’ai adoré les costumes créés par Riccardo Tisci pour le Boléro dansé par le ballet de l’Opéra de Paris. On retrouve un autre modèle du couturier ci-dessous.

La haute couture, ce n’est pas que de la fantaisie, de la broderie et des robes de soirée. Ca peut aussi être très sobre et efficace comme ces tailleurs et manteaux, dont les fameux Chanel. Mais les touches d’excentricité, c’est quand même sympa. Merci Elsa Schiaparelli ! Et est-ce qu’on y voit quelque chose avec ce masque Maison Martin Margiela ? Je porterais plutôt le smoking Yves Saint Laurent.

Today is the last day to catch the Chanel N°5 exhibition, which I highly recommend you do! We’ve all marveled at the ads for this perfume. On top of making us dream, N°5 is the best-selling fragrance in the world and probably the most famous as well.

The exhibition takes place at the Palais de Tokyo which is usually dedicated to modern and contemporary art. Letters, documents, pictures and paintings are shown in long glass tables. A thick catalog handed out at the entrance details these souvenirs and works of art.

Gabrielle Chanel by Man Ray

I expected the exhibition to be centered on the fragrance itself and how special its composition is. But I was wrong: the majority of the works on display are about Gabrielle Chanel: her love life, her inspiration, her friends and her influence on the business of fashion and beauty. This was a bit disconcerting but nonetheless highly interesting. For example, I had no idea that Gabrielle Chanel was a friend and muse to so many great artists. And it is easier to understand why a brand and fragrance have become so successful by learning about their creator.

The exhibition starts with drawings and letters from artists such as Picasso, Apollinaire and Cocteau. As a true visionary, Chanel encouraged them and nourished her inspiration from their art, which convinced her to be even more daring in her own creative process. The score of the Rite of Spring written by Stravinsky caused a great scandal in Paris 100 years ago. The composer was said to be Chanel’s lover.

We are then told about Chanel’s stay in Venice in 1920 after her lover Boy Capel died in a tragic accident. She became fascinated by Byzantine art, which showed in her fashion collections. Venice is also a historical city regarding fragrance and Chanel decided to create her own shortly after this trip.

Chanel N°5 was launched on May 5^th 1921. 5 was Chanel’s lucky number; she actually had her shows every year on February 5^th and August 5^th. The original design of the bottle is inspired by a metal flask found in a men’s bathroom. The cap recalls the shape of place Vendôme in Paris where Chanel rented a suite at the Ritz.

Gabrielle Chanel became the first face of her perfume in 1937. Posing in a suite at the Ritz, she knew she was the best ambassador for her own brand. After her death, in 1972, French actress Catherine Deneuve posed for Richard Avedon.

But the most notorious Chanel N°5 ad was created by Marilyn Monroe in 1954. When a journalist asked her what she wore to bed, she was too embarrassed to say she slept naked and instead replied she wore “a few drops of Chanel N°5”.  Warhol contributed to the myth in 1985.

The exhibition ends upstairs where you can browse books and watch the Chanel N°5 ads directed by famous directors and starring famous actresses like Ridley Scott /Carole Bouquet and Jean-Pierre Jeunet / Audrey Tautou.

Since I was disappointed not to learn more about the fragrance itself, I signed up for a fragrance workshop on the exhibition’s website which turned out to be really interesting.

A few fun Chanel N°5 facts learnt at the workshop:

• Chanel N°5 is made of 80 different ingredients such as citrus fruits, rose, jasmine, ylang-ylang, sandalwood and vanilla.
• Gabrielle Chanel wanted her perfume to have jasmine absolute, a very costly ingredient. Nowadays, 1/3 of the world’s jasmine production is used by Chanel for its fragrances.
• Chanel N°5 is a revolutionary fragrance for its use of aldehydes. At the time of its launch, perfumes were usually centered on a particular floral note like rose or jasmine. Aldehydes turn fragrances into an abstract composition without any dominant ingredient while bringing the intensity and sophistication out of them.
• “A woman who does not wear perfume has no future.” according to Gabrielle Chanel.

Though I love Chanel N°5 for its sensuality, its strength of character and its heavy dose of jasmine, it doesn’t feel totally “me”. I’m much rather a Chanel N°19 kind of girl and have been wearing this perfume for years. However, I wouldn’t say no to N°5 for a very special night. And you, what relationship do you have with Chanel N°5? Would you wear it or is there an ad that has made you want to do so?

Aujourd’hui, c’est le dernier jour de l’exposition Chanel N°5 que je vous recommande fortement si vous ne l’avez pas déjà visitée. On a tous déjà vu les publicités pour ce parfum mythique, le plus vendu dans le monde et sans doute le plus connu. L’expo a lieu au Palais de Tokyo, habituellement réservé à l’art moderne et contemporain. Dans une grande salle sans décor, des lettres, documents, photographies et peintures sont exposés dans de longues tables en verre. Un catalogue épais distribué à l’entrée  détaille ces œuvres (et fait un bon souvenir).

Vu son thème, je m’attendais à une exposition sur l’univers olfactif du N°5. En fait, le parfum est un prétexte pour retracer la vie de Gabrielle Chanel : ses amours, ses inspirations, ses amis et ses révolutions. C’est un peu déroutant, mais on en ressort plus cultivé. Par exemple, je ne savais pas que Chanel était au centre  d’un tel cercle de grands artistes. Et c’est en apprenant pourquoi le personnage est si mythique qu’on comprend mieux en quoi sa mode et son parfum le sont devenu aussi.

Justement, l’exposition commence par des dessins et la correspondance d’artistes comme Picasso, Apollinaire et Cocteau. En visionnaire, Chanel les encourageait et se nourrissait de leur art qui la poussait à devenir encore plus audacieuse dans sa création. La partition du Sacre du Printemps créée par Stravinsky fit scandale il y a 100 ans à Paris. Le compositeur aurait été l’amant de Chanel. Le voyage de Chanel à Venise est ensuite évoqué. Elle s’y rend en août 1920 après la mort de Boy Capel. Fascinée par l’art byzantin, elle s’en inspire dans sa mode. Venise est aussi la ville historique du parfum et Chanel développe le sien peu après ce séjour.

Chanel N°5 est lancé le 5 mai 1921. Le 5 est le chiffre porte-bonheur de Chanel ; d’ailleurs, elle présente chaque année ses collections le 5 février et le 5 août. Le flacon est inspiré d’une flasque de métal trouvée dans une trousse d’homme. Le bouchon évoque la place Vendôme où Chanel vivait dans sa suite du Ritz.

Gabrielle Chanel devient  la première égérie de son parfum en 1937. Elle pose dans une suite du Ritz et sait qu’elle est la meilleure ambassadrice de sa marque. Plus tard en 1972, Catherine Deneuve prend sa place devant l’objectif de Richard Avedon. Mais c’est Marilyn Monroe qui créé  la publicité la plus retentissante en 1954 : lorsqu’un journaliste lui demande ce qu’elle porte pour dormir, elle répond « quelques gouttes de Chanel N°5 » pour éviter de dire qu’elle dort nue. L’immortalisation du flacon par Warhol en 1985 rend le parfum encore plus mythique.

L’expo se poursuit à l’étage dans une médiathèque. On peut y feuilleter des livres sur les sujets abordés dans l’exposition et voir les publicités de grands réalisateurs mettant en scène de prestigieuses égéries : Ridley Scott et Carole Bouquet, Luc Besson et Estella Warren, Jean-Pierre Jeunet et Audrey Tautou…

Comme j’étais déçue de ne pas en savoir plus sur le parfum en lui-même, je me suis inscrite à un atelier olfactif qui s’est révélé fort intéressant.

Quelques infos glanées lors de cet atelier :

• Chanel N°5 est composé de 80 notes différentes, dont les agrumes, la rose centifolia, le jasmin de Grasse, l’ylang ylang, le bois de santal et la vanille.
• Gabrielle Chanel a voulu que son parfum contienne de l’absolu de jasmin, un ingrédient très cher. Aujourd’hui, les parfums Chanel utilisent 1/3 de la production mondiale de jasmin.
• Chanel N°5 est révolutionnaire pour l’utilisation audacieuse des aldéhydes dans sa composition. Les parfums de l’époque mettaient en valeur une note de fleur particulière (rose, jasmin, lilas). Au contraire, les aldéhydes donnent une touche abstraite à la composition : il n’y a plus de note dominante perceptible. Ces molécules de synthèse font exploser les notes florales pour les rendre plus intenses et sophistiquées.
• « Une femme qui ne se parfume pas n’a pas d’avenir. » d’après Gabrielle Chanel.

Je ne suis pas sûre que Chanel N°5 soit le parfum qui me corresponde le mieux (je lui préfère le N°19 que je porte depuis dès années). Cependant cette fragrance mystérieuse, au caractère fort et sensuel avec sa note poudrée de jasmin me touche beaucoup et je la porterais plutôt pour une soirée exceptionnelle. Where is spring in Paris? I am asking this as cold rain is pouring on the first day of May. The weather of the past few days makes you hesitant to shed your winter coat. It even snowed in France last week. So how can we make sure spring is present in our everyday lives as it ought to be by now?

Spring for me reveals itself first and foremost in nature, with flowers blooming and birds happily chirping about. Which is why I fled to the flower market on the Ile de la Cité a few weeks ago when the weather was really dreary. Located a minute away from Notre-Dame-de-Paris, the lush alleys bordered by all sorts of plants and flowers will make you forget that you are in the middle of a bustling city. On Sundays, the experience is even stronger as the market welcomes birds that sing their heart out.

To be honest, I first realized it was supposed to be spring in Paris when I noticed this box in a Ladurée window a couple of months ago.

The gourmet stores have managed to bring us welcomed touches of sunshine: desserts made with spring fruits and decorated with flowers can only cheer you up.

To create a warm atmosphere in my apartment, I favor an old trick of the trade: candles with floral or green fragrances such as Diptyque’s spring selection or Cire Trudon’s Prolétaire. There is nothing more heart-warming though than sniffing a spring-like scent that you love on your wrist. For me, that would be my old favorite Chanel N°19 with notes of iris, moss and white flowers. I also splurged on Guerlain’s L’Heure de Nuit: when I tried this new perfume with bergamot, orange blossom, iris, jasmine, rose, and musk, I had to have it.

And what should we wear? I’m not sure I’d recommend the light summer clothes sold in stores for nowadays, as I would not want you to catch pneumonia. I find it easier to play on accessories: a silk Hermès scarf tied around a sparkly Vanessa Bruno bag can easily cheer up any look. The same goes for pastel and bright nail polish: French natural brand Kure Bazaar has great new colors for this season.

And lastly, because art is the solution to many things, I love to get lost in the paintings of Impressionists to believe that I am actually walking in Giverny. These pictures of Monet’s water lilies were taken at Musée Marmottan, but I’d suggest you’d rather go to the breathtaking Musée de l’Orangerie to admire them.

Has spring really set in where you live? What are your favorite things about this season?

One of my favorite museums in Paris, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, is organizing the beautiful exhibition Fashioning Fashion until April 14^th. Initiated by the LACMA in Los Angeles, this show presents the evolution of European style from 1715 to 1900 with more than 100 looks. A fascinating travel in the past and a true feast for the eyes!

I was surprised by the magnificence of the embroideries, the number of layers worn to create one look and the sophistication of the clothes in general. Dressing oneself seemed to be a complicated affair, especially for women, and little details could reveal the social status of a person. Embroiderers, hatters and corset-makers were once popular trades.

The exhibition is organized chronologically, bringing us to the magnificent clothes of the 18^th century right at the entrance. At the time, there was a huge interest in the Far East, hence the embroideries on silk inspired by China and India. This dressing gown looked like a kimono; an interesting inspiration for nowadays too!

The enormous skirts made me smile. I hope the doors were large enough in the castles for the ladies to go from one room to another!

After the French Revolution and with Napoleon came another time and therefore another style. Beautiful romantic dresses with Empire waists were in fashion, with their cotton coming from India and cashmere shawls inspired by Egypt.

(Unfortunately for women) the romantic style took over in 1820 with balloon-like sleeves. Men were inspired by British dandies.

Clothes worn in the European courts were heavily embroidered such as this gown worn by the Queen of Portugal in 1840.

This dress made me think of The Lady of the Camellias, which I was reading at the time. I really loved the novel and look forward to seeing the ballet adaptation at the Paris Opera in September.

I’m not sure I would have liked to be a woman in the 19^th century when I see the cage-like crinolines they had to wear. And I wonder how they could breathe with such tight corsets!

These “instruments of torture” are relevant to the social condition of women at the time. Their restrained liberty of movement reflected their poor amount of liberty in general, even though travel and leisure were developing quickly along with industrialization.

At the beginning of the 20^th century, S-shaped silhouettes were popular (and backs probably painful and not too happy): extra-tight corsets and high-heeled laced boots were the rule. Thankfully, around 1905, the designer Paul Poiret designed Empire-like dresses and forbid his clients to wear corsets. He also created fun Orient-inspired evening wear.

I would have loved this exhibition to go on and show us more recent looks. In what time would you have liked to live for its fashion?

Fashioning Fashion se tient jusqu’au 14 avril dans l’un des mes musées parisiens préférés, les Arts Décoratifs. Initiée par le LACMA de Los Angeles, cette exposition présente l’évolution de l’histoire de la mode européenne de 1715 à 1900 avec près de 100 silhouettes toutes plus élégantes les unes que les autres. Un vrai régal pour les yeux et un parcours passionnant ! J’ai été étonnée par la magnificence des broderies, le nombre de pièces portées pour constituer une silhouette et l’allure sophistiquée des vêtements en général. Se vêtir à l’époque était une toute autre démarche et le moindre détail reflétait le rang social de la personne aux yeux des observateurs. Des métiers comme brodeurs, chapeliers et corsetiers étaient populaires alors qu’ils ont aujourd’hui pratiquement disparu.

L’exposition est organisée par ordre chronologique, avec dès l’entrée les magnifiques habits du XVIIIe siècle. L’époque était très marquée par la découverte de l’Orient et de nouveaux territoires, d’où de riches broderies d’inspiration indienne et chinoise sur soie. Ainsi, un vêtement d’intérieur ressemblait fortement à un kimono ; une bonne idée à reproduire de nos jours ! Le volume des jupes m’a fait sourire. J’espère qu’ils avaient des portes assez larges à l’époque pour que les femmes circulent dans les châteaux !

Après la Révolution française et le sacre de Napoléon, autre époque, autre style. On retrouve la fameuse taille Empire sur de belles robes romantiques et une inspiration toujours venue d’ailleurs avec des cotons d’Inde et les étoles en cachemire d’Egypte. La silhouette est beaucoup plus simple mais elle se pare de broderies pour le soir, comme sur cette robe à traine du Portugal. Les costumes d’homme restent chargés de broderies tout en adoptant une ligne plus graphique.

(Malheureusement?) le style Empire laisse la place vers 1820 au style romantique avec ses énormes manches gigot et, pour l’homme, une silhouette de dandy tout droit venue d’Angleterre. Si les habits féminins restent relativement simples avec le blanc en couleur dominante, les robes de la Cour restent chargées en broderies, comme celle portée par la reine du Portugal vers 1840. J’imagine très bien cette robe sur Marguerite Gautier, l’héroïne de la Dame aux Camélias. J’ai adoré ce roman et j’ai hâte de voir le ballet qui sera joué à l’Opéra National de Paris en septembre.

Pas sure que j’aurais voulu être une femme au XIXe siècle quand on voit tous les instruments de torture auxquels elles avaient droit. Je parle bien sûr des crinolines, faux-culs et autres ornements de postérieur qui ont dû bien leur pourrir la vie, même avec des robes magnifiques comme celle brodée de fleurs et papillons. Et elles avaient une taille si étroite dans leurs corsets ! Ces mises en cage en disent beaucoup sur les conditions sociales des femmes à l’époque. Elles avaient peu de liberté de mouvement, et peu de liberté tout court, alors que les voyages et loisirs se développaient avec l’industrialisation.

Au début des années 1900, on voit apparaître une silhouette en S avec des corsets très serrés (et une colonne vertébrale qui ne devait pas être très heureuse) et de hautes bottes lacées. Ce n’est qu’en 1906 que le corps commence à se libérer grâce aux collections de Paul Poiret. Ses robes sont inspirées de la mode sous Napoléon et il créé un univers fortement inspiré par l’Orient.

J’aurais aimé que cette exposition continue encore ! A quelle époque auriez-vous aimé vivre pour en porter les vêtements ?

The photography exhibitions at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris are always very popular, drawing a crowd on weekends. The museum showcases works of photographers, famous or not, that allow you to see reality from different perspectives with a great diversity of styles. Such is the case of Joel Meyerowitz, whose retrospective is on show until April 7^th. From the beginning of his career in the 1960s, this photographer documented the American way of life with a heavy European influence.

The exhibition started with black and white images of New York City putting forth its raw energy.

Joel Meyerowitz became officially linked to the history of New York City when, in the aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks, he was the only photographer allowed with unrestricted access to Ground Zero.

From the early 1960s, Joel Meyerowitz was an early advocate of color at a time when color photography was not considered a serious art. Doesn’t this seem hard to believe when the treatment of color actually is a form of art in itself?

What I like in these pictures is that Meyerowitz does a sublime work on color and lighting on the most banal landscapes like Edward Hopper did in his paintings. The objects of the pictures are not exceptional, yet if you’ve ever gone on a road trip in the US, they remind you of the excitement you had while travelling towards a certain destination, the unexpected discoveries on the road, the feeling of being in an unknown place outside of your usual comfort zone, the meals in the most mundane places that end up having their dose of charm.

Eclairs, I see you everywhere! Chestnut cream and rum-filled at La Maison du Chocolat, springlike at Fauchon and now by the dozen at L’Eclair de Génie: I feel like I’ve been on a delightful Parisian éclair tour for the past few weeks.

L’Eclair de Génie, which literally translates to “a flash of genius”, opened in December in Le Marais. I first told you about this tiny store in my post New beginnings. Remember the cute little cake topped with rose petals? During this short visit a few weeks ago, I was surprised by the visual sophistication of the usually simple pastries. I told myself I had to go back so my eyes wouldn’t be the only body part to feast on them.

L’Eclair de Génie was born out of the imagination of the very talented pastry chef Christophe Adam. He previously worked for over 10 years at Fauchon, a big name in French gourmet food known for its éclairs as I showed you in this post.

The increasingly popular L’Eclair de Génie presents a multitude of flavors, ranging from the classic vanilla chocolate to the more original lemon yuzu, pistachio orange, passion raspberry and raspberry chocolate.

Along with the pastries, you will find cute little chocolate truffles filled with chocolate, mandarin, chestnut cream, raspberry and blackcurrant ganaches

Of course I did not resist temptation and went for 2 éclairs. That’s right, only 2 as the pastries seemed a little pricey for their smallish size (4.50€ or 5€ depending on the flavor). Once home, I had the Vanilla pecan nut, a delight with the delicate, fragranced vanilla cream and light choux dough contrasting with crunchy little pieces of nut. I then couldn’t wait to eat the next one, the Salted butter caramel recommended by the salesperson. This was quite simply one of the most amazing desserts I’ve had in a long time for its rich taste of salty caramel. It’s typically the pastry that you eat very slowly because it’s so good and you want to make it last. In the end, I feel like I had good value for money and that L’Eclair de Génie deserves to be a place to visit in Paris for its creativity and great éclairs.

Now if you love macarons, don’t forget that March 20^th is Macaron Day, an event created by the great Pierre Hermé. Patisseries around the world will sell special macarons to benefit the research against mucoviscidosis. An excellent reason to treat yourself!

Eclairs, je vous vois partout ! Chez La Maison du Chocolat, Fauchon et maintenant L’Eclair de Génie : la célèbre pâtisserie est la tendance à Paris pour mon plus grand bonheur. L’Eclair de Génie, c’est tout nouveau : le lieu a ouvert mi-décembre à Saint-Paul dans le Marais, juste à côté de la boutique K-Jacques. Je vous avais parlé de cette toute petite boutique dédiée aux éclairs dans mon billet New beginnings. Vous vous rappelez, ce magnifique petit gâteau orné de pétales de rose ? J’étais passée en coup de vent et m’étais jurée d’y retourner pour les dévorer autrement que par les yeux.

L’Eclair de Génie, c’est le bébé du très talentueux pâtissier Christophe Adam qui a œuvré pendant plus de 10 ans chez Fauchon. Cette grande maison est elle-même reconnue pour ses éclairs, comme je vous l’avais montré dans ce billet. On retrouve chez les deux enseignes une recherche esthétique poussée qui me plait beaucoup. Moi j’aime mes gâteaux bons mais aussi jolis pour le plaisir de mes yeux et mes papilles.

La boutique, qui ne désemplit pas, présente une multitude de parfums allant des classiques vanille chocolat aux plus exotiques citron yuzu, pistache orange, passion framboise et framboise-chocolat. L’Eclair de Génie c’est aussi des petites truffes toutes mignonnes avec des ganaches chocolat, mandarine, crème de marron, framboise et cassis enrobées de chocolat.

Pour satisfaire ma gourmandise, je me suis achetée 2 éclairs. « Seulement 2 ! » vous me direz. Eh oui, en boutique je trouvais le produit un peu cher pour sa petite taille (4,50€ ou 5€ selon le parfum). Une fois rentrée chez moi, j’attaquai le Vanille noix de pécan : un délice avec une douce vanille subtilement parfumée contrastant avec de croquants éclats de noix. Puis je passai à la recommandation de la vendeuse, le Caramel beurre salé. Et là ce fut extraordinaire, avec un caramel riche mais pas écœurant qui fond dans la bouche. C’est typiquement la pâtisserie tellement bonne qu’on prend tout son temps pour la savourer. Au final, vu la qualité, j’estime que j’en ai eu pour mon argent et que le succès de L’Eclair de Génie est bien mérité.

Question gourmandises, c’est la Journée du macaron le 20 mars. A l’initiative de Pierre Hermé, de nombreuses pâtisseries à travers le monde offrent une dégustation de macarons contre un don pour vaincre la mucoviscidose. Une très bonne excuse pour se faire plaisir !

The Palace of Versailles is holding a temporary exhibition until March 17^th, so what better excuse to visit this magical place? Especially since it’s only a quick 40-minute train ride away from Paris. Versailles and Antiquity presents the relationship between the palace and Greek and Roman mythology and history, bringing together over 200 works of art.

This is not the most striking exhibition I’ve seen in Versailles compared to the ones dedicated to fashion and contemporary art. Perhaps my lack of knowledge in mythology didn’t allow me to fully appreciate it. However, the sheer beauty of the works of art and the palace was enough to make the trip worth it (and on top of that the visit ended with lunch at Angelina).

The antique sculpture Diana of Versailles was installed by Louis XIV in the Hall of Mirrors. It was then moved to the Louvre during the French Revolution and is back at the Palace for the first time since 1797.

This dramatic sculpture was originally placed at the top of a fountain in the gardens of the Palace. It depicts Latona with her children Diane and Apollo imploring help from their father Jupiter.

I am savoring a box of exquisite chocolates as I’m typing this post. Star chef Alain Ducasse opened his first chocolate boutique ever in Paris last week, and as a choco-addict of course I had to visit and come back home with a little souvenir.

The boutique is located near Place de la Bastille, quite an unusual area for a luxury gourmet shop. Actually, all the chocolates are made in a factory in the same building, meaning there were many constraints in terms of space. And La Manufacture du Chocolat is a mere 10-minute walk away from Le Marais.

One has to know about the boutique to get there: no sign in the street indicates that it is located in a cute courtyard. The chocolate factory with its big burlap bags full of cocoa beans and machinery is the first thing you see, recalling that La Manufacture du Chocolat Alain Ducasse is all about craftsmanship. As for the boutique itself, it is not a secret place anymore: it was crammed with people to the point that it was hard to get around.

The chocolate bars (75 grams for 6 €) were the most popular but I decided to go for more diversity and treated myself to a “discovery box” at 28 €.

The box itself is surprisingly simple yet elegant. Compared to Les Marquis de Ladurée which I tried 2 weeks ago, the Ducasse chocolates are more refined and conventional in taste. The perfumes of the ganaches and pralines are also much more subdued. By visiting La Manufacture du Chocolat Alain Ducasse, you will discover chocolate in its diversity of origins (Peru, Venezuela, Madagascar…) coming straight from the neighboring factory with a purely artisanal production process.  Les Marquis de Ladurée chocolates are the pretty box that you give to someone as a present whereas Ducasse chocolates would be those you serve with coffee on a silver tray. Speaking of which, La Manufacture du Chocolat supplies Ducasse’s restaurants in France, Monaco and London.

My favorite? The peanut praline (maybe because I miss the peanut butter brownies from Whole Foods…)

Now that I’ve tried Ducasse chocolates, I dream of dining at his restaurant at the Eiffel Tower, the Jules Verne, especially after reading the reviews of my friends Lani and Milla. What is your latest culinary find or desire?

Si je déguste des chocolats exquis en écrivant ce billet, c’est que j’ai visité la toute nouvelle chocolaterie Ducasse ouverte depuis mercredi. C’est la première fois que le chef multi-étoilé ouvre une boutique de ce type, d’où la grande curiosité médiatique et l’affluence de clients curieux comme moi dès ce premier weekend.

La chocolaterie est située à Bastille, lieu étonnant pour une boutique gastronomique même si on est à 10 minutes du Marais. C’est que la manufacture attenante, où tous les chocolats sont produits, posait de nombreuses contraintes en termes d’espace. Très discrète, sans enseigne sur la rue, la chocolaterie est nichée au fond d’une jolie cour. On aperçoit d’abord à travers la vitre la manufacture avec ses sacs de fèves et ses grosses machines avant de pousser la porte de la boutique. Celle-ci s’est révélée fort étroite vue le nombre de clients au point où c’en était désagréable ; à voir si ce n’est qu’un effet passager dû à la nouveauté.

Les tablettes de 75 gr. pour 6 € étaient populaires mais comme je voulais un peu de diversité dans les goûts j’ai opté pour la boite découverte à 28 €. Côté packaging, Ducasse a misé sur une sobriété industrielle mais élégante avec une simple boite en carton. Comparé aux Marquis de Ladurée testé il y a 2 semaines, ces chocolats sont beaucoup plus fins et conventionnels en termes de goûts, les parfums des ganaches et pralines étant parfois à peine perceptibles. Chez Ducasse on cherche d’abord à faire découvrir le chocolat dans sa variété d’origines (Pérou, Venezuela, Madagascar…) avec une fabrication artisanale purement maison. Les Marquis de Ladurée, c’est la boite de chocolat qu’on offre en cadeau pour faire plaisir alors que chez Ducasse, c’est le chocolat que l’on sert avec le café sur un plateau en argent. D’ailleurs, la chocolaterie fournit les restaurants Ducasse de France, Londres et Monaco. Mes préférés ? Les pralinés à l’ancienne à la noix de coco et ceux à la cacahuète qui m’ont donné l’impression de déguster un peanut butter de luxe.

Sacré Ducasse ! Je rêve toujours de dîner à son restaurant de la Tour Eiffel, le Jules Verne, depuis que j’ai lu les critiques de mes amies Lani et Milla. Et vous, quelle est votre envie ou découverte culinaire du moment ?
