Robert Mapplethorpe by Sofia Coppola

???????????????????????????????

I love Sofia Coppola. I love her movies. I love her style. I love her husband. I love her house. I love her Louis Vuitton bag. (I don’t really love the one she designed exclusively for Le Bon Marché, but whatever.) I love her Vogue Australia cover and pictures. Anyway, the buzz around my favorite female director made me want to unearth yet another set-of-pictures-I-took-a-long-time-ago-but-never-published. Because I also happen to love Sofia’s taste in art.

J’adore Sofia Coppola.

You see, a thousand years ago back in December 2011 I was on holiday in France and the Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac in Paris was hosting an exhibition of Robert Mapplethorpe’s photography curated by Sofia Coppola. Of this photographer I only knew the gritty images of Patti Smith so I was pleasantly surprised to discover a whole other dimension of his work: images of solitude, even in a bustling city, portraits of elegant women, details of nature, empty hotels. Some could have been stills of Somewhere, which had been released a year before. It felt like both artists were kindred spirits with common obsessions.

  1. Anne, I love your images and your description of the exhibit, such a vicarious pleasure! Thank you kindly for mentioning and linking to IWTBAC, merci belle !

  2. Seriously though, who doesn’t love Thomas Mars. Or her style. Or her taste? I’d settle for just Thomas Mars though.
